The Ecobee3 thermostat, debuted in 2015 with built-in Alexa support and advanced smart sensors. It soon gained popularity among people because of its easy-to-use features and a large touchscreen display. But the cost wasn’t easily affordable. So Ecobee came with a lighter version, Ecobee3 Lite, that was almost identical to the Ecobee3, except for a few features.

The Ecobee3 Lite thermostat is compatible with almost everything. It has a smart recovery mode, supports two-stage heating and cooling, and is compatible with most HVAC systems. But one thing that it lacks is a smart sensor. The Ecobee3 Lite doesn’t come included with smart sensors in the box. But you can purchase one at an extra cost either from Ecobee’s official site or Amazon.

Let’s talk about the features of Ecobee3 Lite sensors and how can you pair one with your thermostat.

Features of Ecobee3 Lite Sensors

Initially, when the Ecobee3 Lite thermostat was launched, it didn’t support remote sensors. But starting in 2017, they added support for remote sensors. A single remote room sensor is not included in the box of the Ecobee3 Lite thermostat but you can buy it separately or together with the thermostat.

The best part is that the remote sensor is compatible with Ecobee3, Ecobee3 Lite, and Ecobee4. So it’s not like you are buying a smart sensor for one product only.

The remote sensor is designed to detect motion, occupancy, and temperature. It can detect when someone is in the room and will adjust the thermostat accordingly. It also detects when no one is in the room and will turn off the heating or air conditioning unit if it’s not needed anymore.

The Ecobee remote sensor also includes a temperature sensor so it can find the best way to make you feel comfortable. You can install the remote sensors anywhere in your home to provide Ecobee with more information about the temperature and activity in your home.

As a result, you can use the Ecobee’s thermostat sensors to get a better idea of every part of the temperature in your home, and the Ecobee can adjust the heating accordingly.

The sensors provide temperature (and motion) readings in the room of your choice, which then allows the thermostat to potentially adjust the heat according to that room (or zone).

The Ecobee thermostat sensors use PIR detection (which captures the passive infrared radiation that all objects and people emit) to determine if someone is in the room or not.

The Ecobee thermostat sensors also support ‘Follow Me’ mode, which is smart enough to know that someone left room A and then immediately entered room B, knowing that they can lower the temperature in room A and raise it in room B.

SmartSensor for Ecobee3 Lite

SmartSensor is the latest remote sensor developed by Ecobee to let you pair your thermostat with it. It works with Ecobee Smart Security for reassurance that everything’s running smoothly at home.

SmartSensor can be easily connected to Ecobee3 Lite, and once connected, SmartSensors will communicate with your central unit to determine if you need to control the temperature of the individual rooms in which they are located.

You can place the sensor in any area of your room where it can communicate with the Ecobee3 Lite and tell if that room needs to be temperature controlled according to a specific standard. If you are using Apple’s HomeKit App to control the thermostat, you can use its ambient sensor as a HomeKit temperature sensor and even trigger motion-activated automation.

When ‘Follow Me’ is enabled, the Ecobee thermostat averages the temperature of all sensors that report activity and uses that average temperature to determine when to use the equipment. The Ecobee smart thermostat then uses these presence and temperature readings to regulate and balance temperature levels in different rooms of your home. With Ecobee sensors, your thermostat will equalize temperatures throughout your home and minimize hot or cold spots.

How to Pair a SmartSensor with Ecobee3 Lite

Now when you have finally bought a remote sensor, it’s time to learn how to pair it with your Ecobee3 Lite sensor.

Before we proceed, make sure you have set up your Ecobee3 Lite thermostat on the app and connected to Wi-Fi. Once you do that, follow the below steps to pair it:

  • Open the Ecobee app on your phone and click the ‘+’ sign at the top right corner of the app.
  • The screen will change and you’ll be asked, “Which product are you adding to ‘My Home’?”
  • Choose ‘Sensor’ from the list. You also have other options like Switch, Camera, and Contact Sensor.
  • Once you choose ‘Sensor’, you’ll have two options — SmartSensor and Room Sensor. Select the ‘SmartSensor’ option since we are connecting it to an Ecobee 3 Lite thermostat.
  • Click on ‘Let’s Get Started’ and scan the QR code that’ll be found on the back of the device.
  • To let SmartSensor find your thermostat, you have to pull the tab between the sensor and the battery when prompted.
  • The SmartSensor will connect with the Ecobee3 Lite thermostat.
  • Give your Ecobee Smart Sensor a name.
  • Select which comfort modes you would like the Ecobee Sensor to be active.
  • Place your sensor. Congratulations now your Ecobee Sensor is connected to your Ecobee3 Lite thermostat.

Place the sensor at around 4ft height like on a table or an open surface to get accurate readings. But keep it away from exterior walls, windows, direct sunlight, and vents.

The Takeaway

Of all the smart thermostats, the Ecobee3 Lite is one of the most compatible devices and works with Amazon Echo, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings, IFTTT, Wink, and Control4 systems. If you’ve set up your Ecobee and have SmartThings integrated, you can use a paid system/app to integrate third-party temperature and motion sensors into your thermostat.

Ecobee has promised that users who are already using the Ecobee3 Lite will get automatic firmware updates while the new models will come with compatibility. So if you have been thinking of buying a remote sensor for your house, it’s the right time to do so.

The Ecobee’s remote sensors are designed with sensitivity to prevent pets from activating the motion sensor. Both the Ecobee environmental sensor and the SmartSensor uses infrared technology (915MHz radio waves) to detect temperature and human presence.

The bottom line is that by pairing remote sensors with your Ecobee3 Lite, you can control the thermostat smartly. So if you need an extra remote sensor for your house or your sensor got damaged, you can purchase it either from Ecobee’s official site or Amazon.
