Fan Forced Heaters

Browsing

For so long until 2017, a proper smart thermostat was not available for baseboard heaters and line voltage based heating systems.  In 2017, MySa thermostat was launched in the market – which is a smart thermostat exclusively designed for line voltage heating systems like baseboard heaters, fan forced heaters, convectors and for radiant ceiling heaters. MySa comes packed with a lot of smart features like WiFi connectivity, internet based control using apps, voice control by interfacing to smart home hubs (Alexa, Homekit, Google Home etc), energy reports and a lot more.

Thermostats were really “old school” till 2011, and many households were using a simple digital programmable or manual thermostat variant. A revolution was started when Nest labs first introduced smart thermostats in 2011. Since then, lots of new smart and internet connected models like Ecobee, Honeywell RTH9585WF, and Emerson Sensi has gained popularity.

All these revolutions were happening in low voltage thermostat models suitable for central furnaces, heat pumps and central boiler systems. No innovation was happening in thermostats for line volt systems like baseboard heaters until 2017, and Empowered Homes Ltd (headquartered in Canada) put an end to this by launching its  innovative smart thermostat Mysa for line volt systems.

In a nutshell, Mysa is currently the best WiFi enabled smart thermostat for line voltage systems, which can be controlled via internet, has a user friendly mobile app, can be interfaced to smart home hubs for voice control, and is compatible with 120/240 volts, delivering a max output power of 3800 watts at 16 amps current.

This beautifully designed 5.7” tall x 3.8” wide x 1.1” thick thermostat comes in soft white rectangular box type structure. This sleek design blends well into any wallpaper and gives a stylish, elegant look to your wall.

The subtle LED light on its surface shows the ambient room temperature and two control UP/DOWN arrows. The controller is cooled by the heat sink that adds to the big size of this thermostat.

This unit is compatible with the 120V/240V line heating systems like the electric baseboards and supports loads up to 3800Watts.

In order to control the device remotely, you will need to first install the device and then set up the app on your phone.  The app works in both android and iOS devices, and allows you to set up customized comfort from literally anywhere.

The device has self learning abilities and learns your schedule, that is if you have a fixed routine, and programs accordingly for you.

There are quite a few smart, self learning line voltage from Stelpro, ATMOS etc. Here, we shall talk about the features those MYSA smart thermostat posses.

What makes MySa smart thermostat different?

One of the major problems that some of the smart thermostats faced was the lack of proper connectivity and the need for a third party hub. MYSA thermostat has been designed to overcome these issues.

It has relatively good wi-fi connectivity and the MYSA app is also quite user friendly. You need not be a tech guru, to use this app.

Also it works with the popular smart home hubs like Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, IFTTT etc. This means you need not require to install any third party hubs.

Therefore, if all you want in a smart thermostat is that it should work well with its wi-fi connections, MYSA thermostat is the right choice for you.

Design

The Mysa thermostat sports a sleek, modern, yet minimalist rectangular design. It looks like a small white box which may seem a bit thick. It adds to the style quotient of your modern home.

The display shows current room temperature and two arrows (up/down) to change the temperature setting on device. Temperature and the arrows are displayed using LED, which resembles the dotted displays of the past with a modern outlook. The display is capacitive touchscreen, and the UP/DOWN arrows can be touched to increase or decrease the temperature setting.

Mysa is a little bulkier in build and the thickness is due to the big heat sink used to cool off the Triac based switching IC. Many conventional thermostats uses relay based switching which is inefficient compared to triac switching. Though the use of triac makes the device bulkier, it gives significant benefits in terms of faster switching, higher efficiency and energy savings.

The brightness of the display can be adjusted through the mysa app. It can be turned completely off or set to a light in the 10- 100 percent brightness range. It is wired directly to the power supply and hence discards the need of using batteries.

Next thing, which makes a thermostat smart, is its in built sensors. Let us see what this thermostat has to offer in regard to its sensors.

Sensors

If we talk about its in-built sensors, then it is embedded with humidity and temperature sensors. These predict the amount of humidity and temperature of your room. It reflects the measured value on its screen, through a subtle LED light. This helps the thermostat to maintain the temperature of the room.

When the temperature sensor measures the room temperature to a value, which is far from the set value, the thermostat works at a high power. This power is reduced as the room temperature approaches the set value.

The display shows how much power is being used by the thermostat. A single small flame indicates low energy consumption, while 3 small flames indicate highest energy consumption.

The one drawback with this model is that it lacks motion sensor. This effectively means that it does not offer any native geo fencing feature, which is one of the helpful tools in reducing the energy usage.

Talking about the remote sensors, it senses the outside temperature when integrated with the smart hub like IFTTT through the MYSA app on your phone.

Sensor Specs

Temperature Precision: +/- 0.4 F / 0.1 ℃
Humidity: +/- 2%
Control Range: Complete Off, 5-30 ℃

Customised Comfort

MYSA can be controlled from anywhere through its app on any android/iOS device. You can set the temperature and schedule according to your routine, easily through this app. You can set up to a total of 56 temperature set points for the whole week. This means that, if you spread the temperature set points evenly over the week, you can set up to 8 temperature values a day.

You can create zones in your home, by using two or more thermostat which needs to work on same schedule, through the MYSA app. You can create your customized schedule and save it for future. Also, if you have a fixed routine, the MYSA thermostat learns it and implements it accordingly.  Your thermostat will work according to your schedule, and deliver its best performance. In case you need to change the temperature in a particular zone, you can use the “Hold indefinitely” option. This overrides the set temperature to the new value.

Energy Saver

When you invest in such a high priced smart thermostat, you need to know if its worth the price. A smart thermostat is placed in your smart home, to help you save energy in a smart way. So, you have to choose a thermostat which would help you for the same.

How this smart thermostat aids in saving the energy? Well. it generates real time energy usage reports which lets you check where and how much energy is being wasted. This helps you in generating an optimal schedule that not only suits your life style, but also your pocket.

Another cool feature is its easy to activate, vacation mode. If you are going away on a vacation, then set the vacation mode on. The thermostat will work accordingly.

There is also an option to cut off the supply between the thermostat and the heater. This means, you can use the thermostat only when it is needed.

The MYSA app also estimates how much energy bill you will have to pay, according to the energy usage.

Pros

  • Sleek, robust design
  • Reliable wireless connectivity
  • Temperature and humidity sensors with high precision
  • Schedule up to 56 temperature points, that is around 8 temperature set points for each day
  • Works really well and in sync with popular smart home hubs like the Apple Homekit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and IFTTT.
  • Voice control via smart home hubs.
  • Use of TRAIC Integrated circuit instead of a relay helps the thermostat to heat up at different intensities, which in turn increases the thermostat efficiency
  • Energy usage reports available in mobile app helps in proper energy use monitoring and save energy by taking necessary action.
  • Quick set of the vacation mode
  • Supports multi zone feature

Cons

  • Lack of motion sensor.
  • No native Geofencing, which is quite useful in reducing the energy consumption.
  • Does not support Samsung smartthings hub as of now.
  • Use of large heat sink for the TRAIC IC makes the product thick and bulky.

To wrap up, MySa is currently the best line voltage thermostat with WiFi feature for systems like baseboard heaters. If you’re serious about WiFi feature, you should not look beyond MySa as its wireless connectivity is very reliable. Also, there are not many choices for line volt thermostats with WiFi feature and a well designed mobile application. Though there are models like Stelpro KI, they require third party hubs like an Z wave controller to connect to home WiFi network or internet. And the mobile app for Stelpro model is substandard. Overall, MySa is really a winner & the best choice (if you’ve enough budget) as a modern, smart line voltage thermostat.

Honeywell is a name familiar among most of the households in USA. They make products & solutions in different sectors like aerospace, home building solutions, environment, energy and safety. When it comes to thermostats, they have a wide variety of models catering to different needs. In fact, no other company has thermostat models in high number as Honeywell. In this article, we review Honeywell RLV4305A1000 – a line voltage thermostat model for baseboard heaters, fan-forced heaters, convectors and radiant ceiling heaters.

RLV4305A is a 5-2 day programmable thermostat, which can operate at two different line voltage levels – 120 volts/240 volts. This model is single pole/2 wire – which means there will be only 2 wires coming out of the thermostat. A 5-2 day programmable thermostat will have two program settings, one for weekdays and the other for weekends. Besides these two week based program settings, a single day can have 4 different settings for morning, mid-day, evening and night.

A precise temperature control of  +/-0.5°F is ensured with Triac based switching technology, which also facilitates silent switching operation. At 240 volts, a max load of 3500 watts can be handled. For resistive loads max current is 14.6 amperes, and the load should draw a minimum current of 0.83 amperes.

So that was all about Honeywell RLV4305A in a quick nutshell. We shall discuss some of the key features of Honeywell RLV4305A1000E1 thermostat in this article, to give you a good ideas about this model. We will be covering features, technical spec, installation, pros & cons, and other aspects of RLV4305A thermostat.

Check Price & View Details

Honeywell’s RLV4305A1000E1 is an improved version of its predecessor YRLV430A1005/U – 5-2 Day Programmable Thermostat. The new model (RLV4305A) has resolved some of the issues which the older model had.

Let’s dig deep into more of its features:

The Design

This rectangle shaped thermostat from Honeywell measures 4.8 x 1.2 x 5 inches (WxDxH). The white colored outer body is quite sleek and blends well in any room. It has 5 push buttons for control, a push button for selecting the mode and an up-down push button (for increasing/decreasing temperature or other parameters). A backlit screen for display is provided just above the mode button, at the rightmost part of the thermostat.

You may find the size a bit large, as this model is a  little bigger when compared to other line voltage thermostat models.

Display

This model has a digital display screen with a backlight. The display will be backlit for 12 seconds when any button is pressed.  The highlight of the display is current room temperature and day/time. Apart  from these two vital info, a quick look at the display will get you details like the working mode of the thermostat (auto or manual), the configuration (fan forced heater or baseboard heater etc), heating intensity and other details. It also indicates whether the settings are locked or not.

You can see the set point temperature whenever you want, by just pressing the Up or Down button once. The clock will be replaced by the set point value for 5 seconds.

Unlike its earlier model, this newer version has a clear display which can be easily comprehended. The usual “small hand” symbol is replaced by a “man” to indicate that the thermostat is working in “manual mode”.

RLV4305A Compatibility

RLV4305A is a line voltage thermostat (which can operate at either 120 volts or 240 volts), suitable for baseboard heaters, convectors, fan-forced heaters, and radiant ceiling heaters. This thermostat is not compatible for low voltage systems (that operate at 24 volts) like heat pumps, central heating systems like a central furnace, or a boiler.

Honeywell RLV4305A is 2 wire/single pole, but you can also use this for a 4 wire installation.

Note: RLV4305A is not compatible with heating systems driven by a contactor or a relay (inductive loads).

At 240 volts, a max load of 3500 watts can be handled. For resistive loads max current is 14.6 amperes, and the load should draw a minimum current of 0.83 amperes. At 120 volts, max load can be 1800 watts.

Accuracy

One of the features to vouch for when buying a thermostat is its accuracy, as it decides the amount of energy it can save. This thermostat has an accuracy of +/-0.5°F and gives a satisfactory performance with regard to its energy saving capabilities. All this owes to its TRIAC switching technology.

Switching sounds

RLV4305A1000E1 performs its switching operation in 100 percent silence. It does not produce any annoying click/tick sounds and disturb your sound sleep or a peaceful environment. RLV4305A uses triac switching, which does not produce any switching sounds. You can install it anywhere, even in your bedrooms, and sleep peacefully.

Operating Modes

This 5-2 day programmable thermostat operates in four modes: Automatic, manual, away and stand-by mode.  The mode button is pressed to select the desired mode.

You can use the automatic mode to pre set temperatures for a day. Here a day is fragmented over 4 periods namely: wake, leave, return, and sleep.  However, only two temperatures can be set. This means that you will have the same temperatures set for wake and return, leave and sleep.

You can set a particular program for 5 days of the week and a separate program for the other two days (like weekends). This is of great use for professionals, who stay away from home during weekdays and stay at home during weekends.

In the manual mode, the temperature has to be set manually each time a change is needed. The away mode is great if you are going out for a small trip and will be away for an extended period of time. This will set the temperature of your house to a particular set point which will save energy, and at the same time your home will be nice & comfortable when you return.

The stand by mode is used to disable the heating. The thermostat will not work at any set point temperature in this mode. The frosting is avoided by maintaining the room temperature above 41 degree F.

Installation

The installation of this thermostat is quite simple. It can be connected in either 2 wire or 4 wire mode.  If you know how to handle the electric connections, you can install it yourself. However, I would recommend you to hire a professional electrician for the installation. The users manual provided by Honeywell guides you through the installation process.

Power Source

No batteries are used by this thermostat. It is infact powered by heater line. It retains the clock and temperature settings between the power outages (for 5 hours) which is a great advantage. If power fails for more than 5 hours continuously, you might need to adjust the settings.

Cost

The RLV4305A1000E1 is an energy saving line volt thermostat. You need not worry about the initial cost, because you can get the money back in the form of energy savings. Proper programming can reduce energy usage to a great extent, which has a huge impact on your electricity bills.

Owing the increasing energy rates charged by the companies, we tend to look for economic options. Therefore se days, its always better to opt for a programmable thermostat rather than a non-programmable one.

The digital thermostats have huge effect on reducing your monthly expenses in terms of the energy bills. Regulating the temperatures and using the thermostats only when needed, help a lot in saving energy.

If you do not prefer the high end digital models that have wi-fi capabilities and just want a basic and simple programmable line thermostat for your electric baseboard, then choosing Honeywell’s TL8230A1003 would be great for you.

Honeywells TL8230A1003 is a line voltage 7 day programmable digital thermostat and is available on many online retail sites like Amazon.

What makes it a fairly good choice?

Before you decide to invest some of your hard-earned money on a thermostat, would it not be nice to know if it suits your desires?

To know you made the right choice you need to know what sort of model it would be like how it would look like, what modes are available etc.

This thermostat comes in with two mounting screws and four solder-less copper wires for connection. It has great easy to use display and a compact design

Let me break down more of its other aspects in points, to give you a concise and clear idea of what to expect of this thermostat.

  • Design

Talking about the design, it is 4.8 inches in height and 2.8 inches in width. The depth is not much since the front does not stick out from the wall much. It is a vertical thermostat and hence looks compact.

It has non slip rubber buttons on both sides to control and program the settings. These are however small ones, which may cause inconvenience while using them. Another drawback in its design is that these buttons do not have a backlight. Thus, you will find it difficult to change the settings in the dark.

Next the arrangement of buttons has been made in such a way that these are easy to use. However, you must be careful to not to press the “clear” button, accidentally as it is not provided in a separate area. Pressing “clear” button will erase your program, and you will have to set it all over again.

It has a conventional rectangular box design, the ones which you usually see in most of the honey wells thermostat, nothing modern or trendy like its ecobee or nest counterparts

It comes with a digital display which has been elaborately reviewed in the next point.

  • Display:

This thermostat has a large backlit digital display. You will love how clearly it displays the important information, like time, actual temperature and the set temperature along with the mode in which the device is working. Not only this, it also shows a bar graph which indicates how much power is being consumed by your heating/cooling system. It has a green background which makes the numbers easily visible during the night or low light times. A button at the bottom is provided for lighting the back light.

So, if you prefer a large, clear digital display which can be easily read in any lighting condition, this thermostat is right one for you.

  • Modes:

The thermostat basically has two operating modes: Automatic and manual modes. As already mentioned this one is a 7 day programmable thermostat. This comes with a pre-set schedule. So, in the automatic mode you can either use this schedule or program your own schedule.

It provides a completely customizable programming option, with four different periods(sleep, wake, return, away) for a day. You can easily set the program to set the temperature for a whole week, day wise. Even if you are going to be out of town, you can use the “vacay” option. This option, however is not programmable.

You cannot set four temperatures for a day even though a day is divided into 4 periods. You can have same temperature for “sleep” and “away” periods and same one for “wake” and “return”. This means for an entire day you can set two temperatures only.

In the manual mode, the thermostat would not follow a programmed schedule, rather would just work at the set temperature for the entire day unless changed by you.

  • Compatibility:

This aspect is the most important one to be considered while shopping for a thermostat. You need to know your heating/cooling system before setting out to buy a thermostat. Since all the thermostat do not support all the heating systems, checking compatibitly with your system is a must.

So, if you have 240V line voltage electric baseboards, convectors and fan forced heaters (resistive rated loads) then you can use this thermostat without any apprehension. It is perfectly compatible with these home electric heaters.

  • Switch on/off sounds

One of the most favourable features of this thermostat is its silent relay. You will be free from the constant ticking sound every time the thermostat changes its temperature settings in the timed modes. This provides a great relief from the annoying sounds during the switch on and off moments. It has been carefully sound proofed for silent operation which has been a common cause of concern in the conventional thermostats.

  • Installation:

Installation of this thermostat can be done by self, if you are familiar with the wiring stuffs. The device comes with a detailed manual that describes the process and precaution to be taken while installing it. However, if you are lay man with not much experience in handling heavy voltage, you must hire a professional to save your life as well as your home wiring. The installation is pretty simple and can be simply done by a professional electrician.

  • Cost

This is another major factor which decides your thermostat. Cost of this thermostat is fairly attractive, since I find it quite reasonable when comparing it with its nest and ecobee counterparts.

Moreover, it has an accuracy of about ±1 F. This saves up to an additional 10% on your heating bills. So, the money you invest on it will come back to you iver a period of time in the form of savings. Sounds great, right?

  • Power Source

This thermostat is battery powered but there is no need to change the batteries for a ling time. It does not have battery back up though. This means in the event of a power outage, the programmed settings will get erased and you will have to re-program the temperature settings again when the supply comes back.

In a nutshell:

These are some of the key features of the thermostat. Hope it helps you decide whether or not to go for this one.

To wrap it up, let me just list out the pros and cons of this product precisely:

Pros:

  • Large, Backlit digital display with all the pertinent information
  • Sleek, vertical rectangular design
  • 7-day programmable option
  • Availability of the manual option, to override the pre-set schedule
  • Silent operation
  • Fits in a decent budget
  • Certified energy saving thermostat, with precision of ±1 F.

Cons:

  • Small rubber control buttons
  • No separate area for the clear button
  • Only two temperature settings available
  • Vacay mode cannot be programmed
  • No batter backup, whole program gets erased in case of a power outage

Plenty of options are there for you in the market when you shop for a digital programmable thermostat. Choose the right one for your heating/cooling systems according to your convenience and budget.
