In this article, I’m going to list down all the Thermostat issues along with their causes and solutions.

For your HVAC system to function efficiently, your thermostat must be in top-notch condition. The latter is what controls and manages cooling and heating.

The thermostat relays information and activates the specific HVAC systems based on the temperatures you set.

On the contrary, in case your system isn’t doing so, fret not! I’ve prepped a detailed list for you to explain how you can troubleshoot a Trane thermostat.

The HVAC system or the thermostat not working are often the most frequent Trane Thermostat troubleshooting issues. Generally, a tripped fuse is at blame in the first instance. The latter case is because of dead batteries. I advise calling an expert if neither of those solutions work.

Most of the time, these problems aren’t that easy to fix. To know more about these issues, their causes, and solutions, I strongly advise you to continue reading.

Trane Thermostat Common Issues & Troubleshooting Tips

If you’ve been searching for solutions on the internet, you’ll know that there are some pretty basic issues that many users face. I’ve listed down a few of them in detail for you.

1. Electrical Failure

This particular issue mostly occurs during the installation process. It’s because of improper wiring.

Therefore, if you don’t know the workings of HVAC systems or electrical circuits, I’d strongly advise you to call a professional.

Get in touch with customer support if you’ve recently made a purchase.

2. Constant Room Temperature

Have you been cleaning and maintaining your Trane thermostat regularly? Because believe it or not, a dirty thermostat can be the cause behind your room temperature remaining unchanged.

A dirty and ill-maintained thermostat cannot regulate temperatures and function efficiently. A quick fix is to clean the device properly by taking it apart.

The same is true for HVAC units. You can either replace the filters or give them a good cleaning. Although, I’d suggest getting new filters.

3. Unchanging Configurations

You must never forego reading instructions manuals when it comes to sophisticated devices such as HVAC units and thermostats. That’s because there’s a high chance of messing up steps and unchanging configurations are among the common issues that arise out of that.

In simple terms, it locks the thermostat. But fret not! The solution is pretty simple.

On your thermostat, you’ll see buttons such as + and . Continue to tap them repeatedly until it unlocks the system.

There’s also a chance that won’t fix the issue. In such cases, you’ll need to reset the Trane thermostat.

4. HVAC Not Stopping

After installing the Trane thermostat, you realize that the HVAC unit isn’t shutting down. Such issues are common, and there’s also an easy fix.

Powering down the entire circuit usually does the trick. In case that isn’t working out for you, it could mean that the space is too big for your unit.

5. HVAC Not Starting

This is generally the case when you’re done integrating the entire unit, but the HVAC refuses to start.

The issue is either due to flipper breakers or blown fuses. I advise you to check the primary power supply and see which is the case.

In case there’s nothing wrong there, try resetting the Trane thermostat.

Even after a reset, if the HVAC unit fails to start, get in touch with customer care.

Is Your Thermostat Still Not Working? Here’s What You Can Do:

No Cooling

Causes Solutions
A blown fuse or the circuit breaker has tripped. Resetting the circuit breaker will do the trick.
Faulty outdoor unit. Manually power down the Trane thermostat. Doing so will trigger an automatic reset. If the issue persists, contact a professional.
Incorrect Thermostat settings. Make sure you’ve set accurate cooling settings. If the settings aren’t correct, set it to cool at your preferred temperatures.

Absence of Airflow

Causes Solutions
Dirty coil; causes the system to freeze Examine the indoor coil enclosure for cold surfaces or water leakage. Defrost it by turning off the unit.
Dirty filters. Replacing the old filters with new ones or thoroughly clean them.

Drain Pan Overflowing

Cause Solution
Malfunctioning Overflow Switch. Cut the power.

Heating

Causes Solutions
The circuit breaker has tripped. A simple circuit breaker reset will do the trick.
The unit isn’t powered. Make sure you’ve followed the user manual and plugged in the thermostat and heating unit properly.
Incorrect thermostat settings. Ensure you’ve turned on the thermostat and set the heat settings accurately.
Issues with the gas.  Examine the gas valves at the furnace shutoff valve and gas metre and see if they’re turned on. If there’s no incoming gas, get in touch with customer support.

Why did my Trane thermostat go blank?

There are two possible reasons why your Trane thermostat went blank:

  1. Faulty wirings.
  2. Dead batteries.

Therefore, continue reading to know what you must do to address these issues.

Trane Thermostat Blank Screen: Troubleshooting Tips

  1. Get new Batteries.

Dead or low batteries are among the simplest and most common reasons behind a blank screen.

You can easily solve this issue by getting new batteries. I highly recommend you purchase non-rechargeable alkaline batteries.

Also, don’t mix old and new batteries or use them together.

  1. Examine the wiring of the unit.

Check for faulty wirings if the screen is still blank after getting new batteries.

Faulty wiring can also be the reason behind a blank screen. The unit will go blank if the wires are burned, pinched, or loose.

Get rid of the burnt wires and use appropriate terminals for loose wires.

I’d suggest having a professional deal with the wires if you’re an inexperienced user.

  1. Power Cycle the Trane thermostat.

In case the above-mentioned tips don’t work in your favor, you can tinker with the circuit breaker and power cycle the unit.

I followed these steps to power cycle my unit.

  • I made sure to turn off the HVAC system.
  • I then proceeded towards the circuit breaker and found the apt switch that controls my thermostat.
  • I switched it off.
  • I turned the switch back after waiting for about thirty seconds.

Why Does Trane Thermostat Say Wait?

The “Waiting” on your thermostat screen signifies there’s an issue that needs to be addressed.

During this situation, you won’t be able to use the unit. It typically suggests that the compressor is not ready for usage.

At the same time, it doesn’t mean that your unit is going to blow up or anything. Often, this situation arises right after a reset, as the unit needs time to finish syncing.

With that in mind, let’s discuss what you can do to fix the “Waiting” issue.

Trane Thermostat Say Wait: Troubleshooting Tips

  1. Examine the heater.
  • Go ahead and tap on System
  • Set it to Heat.
  • Turn on the heater by setting a higher temperature.
  1. Examine the aircon: Similar to the steps above, all you need to do is set a temperature lower than the room temp. That will trigger the aircon to start cooling the room.
  1. Examine the fuse: Proceed to check whether there’s a blown fuse or tripped circuit. Ensure that the AC and furnace breakers are working properly.

To do that, carry out a simple circuit breaker reset by turning it off and turning it on after 30 seconds.

  1. Ensure that the HVAC isn’t running.
  2. Go to the breaker box and locate the power switch for the HVAC system.
  3. Switch it off.
  4. Turn it on after thirty seconds.

An old and inefficient unit doesn’t only cost you money but can also prove to be dangerous. Following are a few signs for you as to when you should replace your Trane thermostat.

  1. Short cycles of the HVAC system.
  2. Outdated and old (over 15 years of usage).
  3. High electricity bills.
  4. Malfunctioning HVAC unit; erratically turns off and on.
  5. Unresponsive settings.
  6. Inaccurate thermostat readings.

After trying every troubleshooting tip I’ve mentioned, if your issue stays unresolved, don’t panic yet. It doesn’t mean you’ll need to buy a new unit.

There’s still one final resort left: Call a professional.

Let them decide whether your unit is reparable/salvageable or needs to be replaced with a new one.

I strongly advise you don’t involve yourself in dangerous electrical repairs of any sort. Get in touch with HVAC professionals and let them handle it.
